The Freshwater Lake

The trail to Freshwater Lake (L'Etang) starts near the village of Laudat at an elevation of about 2500', located on the south-central portion of Dominica. The hike to this Lake is easy and follows a flat grade that runs along side a hydropipeline. In the adjacent photograph, Margaret is following our guide, Irving along the pipeline. This trail runs in an west to east direction along the southern flank of Morne Macaque (Microtin), which has a maximum elevation of just over 4000'.

Cabrits National Park

Cabrits National Park is located on the northwestern coast of Dominica, an area of 1,313 acres of upland and 1,053 acres of marine or underwater park. It is a uniquely saddle-shaped peninsula that was formed by the twin peaks of an extinct volcano. The term 'Cabrits' is derived from the french word for goat because sailors left goats to run wild on the Cabrits as a source of fresh meat for future visits. In the photograph to the left, the waterbody in the foreground is Prince Rupert's Bay. On the north side of Cabrits is Douglas Bay, the location of a marine sanctuary with a marked underwater trail for snorkeling and diving.

Cold Soufriere

At the northern end of Dominica is Morne aux Diables. There is a Mountain road that crosses the northern slope of this Mountain, starting in Pennville on the east and terminating at Guillet on the West. At the crest of this road lies an idyllic valley known as Soufriere but if there ever were a Garden of Eden, this is it. Even snakes, specifically Boa's, are present.
