La Brae - Pitch Lake

On the southwest tip of Trinidad is one of the world's few open pitch lakes from which this ingredient of asphalt has been mined and exported since 1859. Since the late 1800s, Trinidadian pitch has found its way into the streets of America, England, India, Singapore and even Japan, to name a few. Visitors to the site walk across the fairly solid skin of the lake, but must do so with a guide since several areas are too soft to support people. The attraction embodies the uniqueness, strange beauty and oddities of this environment.

Little Tobago Island

Little Tobago Island on the extreme east end of Tobago across from Speyside, is an uninhabited bird sanctuary with several kms of trails. It most spectacular views are from the hills overlooking the seaward direction where Red-footed Boobies and Frigate birds can be seen swooping in significant numbers. Regularly scheduled glass-bottomed boats ferry visitors to the island, revealing the coral reefs below as they circle past the smaller Goat Island in Tyrrel's Bay..

Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust Description

The middle of an oil refinery may seem an odd place for a nature sanctuary, but this is one of the best bird viewing spots in Trinidad. Encompassing a lake with a trail around the periphery and an interpretation center near the parking lot, the 25 ha site is part wild birds and part breeding cages for endangered species. The highlight includes the ability to get close to wild Scarlet Ibises which is much harder or not possible in other sanctuaries. A wide range of wild bird species and the photogenic nature of the overall site make the site a prime visit spot. The trust was founded in 1966 and is a volunteer-run organization.
